Dealing with a new born—baby nappies to the rescue
Babies are cute. Even when they stink.
And they stink for most portions of the day.
Often, newbie parents feel confused,
even scared, because parenting classes may prepare them, but nothing matches
the reality of handling a pooping, peeing, stinking baby.
Well, practice helps you perfect the
art. And getting the hang of dealing with baby diapers is nothing short
of art. So, take a look at this tiny guide. And work to get to a point where
you can diaper any baby—sleeping, crawling, or sprinting.
1. Set up the changing station
You need a changing table, baby
nappy pads, a diaper disposal system, some wet wipes, child-appropriate
lotions, and warm water dispenser.
And you need it all in the changing
station, away at one hand’s distance.
Newborn baby nappies
differ in size from the ones for older children. Finding a proper size, snug
fit, and chemical free diaper needs to be your priority.
2. Get your gag reflexes under control
Between the first few days and months,
you can tell what went inside the baby from what came out of him/her.
The stool would be blackish-green at
first. Then, on the breast milk diet, it’ll be mustardy, yellow in colour, and
runny, with a slight odour.
Formula diet produces a deeper shade
of poop with a stronger odour. Pureed fruits will create colourful crap. An
iron supplement will produce blackish stools. Switch the baby to solid food,
and in the beginning, you may even see a bit of said undigested solid.
You’ll get used to it, they say!
3. And try not to panic, even though
you will, on poop-less days
Babies may poop after they feed. Or
they may not crap for about a week. Don’t panic. Don’t resort to supplements.
Don’t self-medicate or worry yourself crazy over a non-pooping baby.
They’ll poop. Call a doctor if you’re
worried. But know that it’s okay for babies to have irregular bowel movements.
And keep these handy tips in mind
- Empty your garbage regularly if you use disposable diapers for the baby
- Change the diaper brand or size if you see any kind of rash or linings around his/her waist or legs
- If the baby’s umbilical cord hasn’t fallen off yet, keep it dry by folding the diaper waistline
- Always sanitise your hands right after cleaning the baby
